I hope you enjoyed “Off to the North,” a story about two dragons having a family and then getting a divorce. I have to say, I really struggled to capture the concept that the children were both a part of their mother and father. Making a family is a mysterious concept because it is the blending of two completely separate people. It takes two people to make a child, and both of them have a contribution to their development. That is why I chose to have a red and blue dragon to have a magenta and a violet dragon. I wanted to show that one of the children may take after the mother and one after the father. Either way, both the mother and father have contributed to the life and character of the child. With that in mind, this book is not about racism. As I was writing this story, many of my early readers immediately took this book to be racist. I apologize for the lack of clarity; I could not think of a better way to show that both parents mix when a child is made. The colors are the most accurate way of describing the blending; however, it is easy to misinterpret the intention.+
